The USBC Youth is a non-profit youth organization focused on providing fun for youth bowlers and adult volunteers. There are nearly 500,000 members competing in 45,000 USBC leagues and tournaments in roughly 7,400 bowling centers in the United States, Canada, and on U.S. military bases abroad. All youth who have not reached their 22nd birthday on, or before August 1st can become members. All programs and services encourage healthy competition, physical fitness, good sportsmanship, and positive citizenship. Through the efforts of USA Bowling, the U.S Olympic Committee has granted junior Olympic status to USBC youth bowling leagues in the United States.
For many years Napa Bowl has offered youth bowling. The objective, until 1995 was to produce “recreational” bowlers. The entire bowling industry with rare exception produced bowlers at the recreational level. In spite of this philosophy, there have been several professional bowlers produced by Napa Bowl. Tish Johnson, a LP tour bowler, is the most successful example.
In recent years the bowling industry has provided resources and training to alter the objectives of youth bowling programs. Emphasis is being shifted to bowling being taught as a sport . Napa Bowl endorsed this shift in 1996 and began steps to incorporate the appropriate changes. The key to this transition is quality, and high level coaching. All coaches support the Napa Youth Program, as well as they are certified by the USBC training system. Education and sportsmanship will be stressed in each segment of the program. There are three major age groups for USBC members:
- Bantams ………….................... Up to 8 years of age
- Preps …………......................... 9 to 11 years of age
- Junior/Senior/Majors …..…….. 12 to 20 years of age
USBC Coach Approval Procedure
All coaches must be USBC certified prior to dealing with members on the lanes. Any adult is welcome to become certified through a Napa Bowl Coach or through a Nor Cal USBC clinic.
Once an adult is certified, they may request to join the USBC coaching staff. The current committee of Napa Bowl Coaches will convened to accept or reject the new volunteers request.
All accepted volunteers will be placed were help is needed, and not necessarily the league to which their child belongs to. Napa Bowl is interested in enthusiastic, and caring, positive role models to assist in coaching USBC members. If you are interested please contact Napa Bowl proprietors or any current USBC coach.
